PotM June 2016: Senet Board game Part 3

This is the first project of the month that I haven't finished this year. I was in an accident recently, and the stress of dealing with that didn't leave me in a very creative space.

I did manage to get some paint on the senet board with my airbrush, but it's barely more than base coating and some highlighting. I'll just have to consider the painting of the senet board a separate project from the assembly and come back to it later.

So far I've used Minitaire paint in Muddy Brown, Cracked Leather, and then Mummy

My painting setup

I like seeing how other people set up their painting areas to see if they do something I can carry over to improve my own. With that in mind I figured I would share mine.

On my desk:

(not numbered: my paint splattered cutting mat)
1) A paint pot holder made using hirst arts blocks. I've knocked over my paint pots so many times (see cutting mat), and this prevents that from happening.
2) A dropper bottle of Liquitex Flow-Aid solution
3)  I made these holders (hirst arts blocks again) to prevent my wash cups from moving around on me. The white cup is a cleaned greek yogurt container, and the lid is to prevent my cat from drinking out of them. The single holder is for my metallic wash cup.
4) Double wash cup holder with one cup for clean and one for dirty water. Also a space for frequently used tools in the middle.
5) My most used tools - a glass dropper, a paint mixing tool I bought on amazon, small pair of scissors to cut rampant hairs off my brushes, and a pair of tweezers
6) My wet pallet
7) Mixing pallet with wells covered in aluminum foil for easy clean up

My basket of free napkins. Every time you eat out grab a few.

I store my paints in a rolling scrapbook tower.

The first tray is metallic paints. The second is full of my warm color paints, third is cool colors. The fourth blue tray is all my washes, and then below that are my pigments and duplicate paint pots.

The rest of the trays in the chart are full of miniatures that I'm working on. It makes it easy to separate projects by pull out one to work on.

PotM June 2016: Senet Boardgame Part 2

Here is the fully assembled Senet boardgame. I sanded it to smooth out the edges on the blocks that were sticking up.

I made the end able to pull out with a foam core box inside. This is to hold the game playing pieces for the game.

The inner box folding open for access.

40k Harlequins

I did a painting commission for a troupe of Harlequins, and Solitaires (one new and one old metal miniature). The owner has Eldar painted in a flame paint scheme, and Dark Eldar in a purple paint scheme. They requested that the Harlequins be painted to blend with both armies. I think the orange and purple motley, and the purple to yellow ombre cloaks capture this nicely. Edit: check out the Harlequin Skyweavers I painted to match this commission.

Transferring old paint to new bottles

I've had a problem with my older paints drying out, and figured it was finally time to transfer them over to some new dropper style bottles. I'm still researching what I can use as agitators. I think I'll will purchase some ceramic beans used for blind baking

You can get these dropper bottles from container and packaging supply. I ordered black PP 15-415 dropper tip cap (item L506BL), natural-colored PP 15 mm controlled dropper tip (item L502C), and 1/2 oz natural-colored LDPE boston round bottle with 15-415 neck finish (item B443).

Today's Mini Haul

My Dark Angel banner bearer order came in at my local gaming store, and they also had the Sector Imperialis bases in stock. These will be perfect for some Sisters of Battle that I won in an ebay auction, but didn't include bases.

King of Tokyo Playmat

I always have trouble keeping track of everyone's points when playing King of Tokyo. I scanned the game board and printed it out on some white cotton fabric. Then added two blue borders, and quilted around the squares. I made some templates for the heart health track and star victory point track out of freezer paper and painted those on by hand. Then I made some token sets out of hirst arts pieces in several colors.

PotM June 2016: Senet Boardgame

The project of the month for June 2016 is my Senet boardgame. After running into a situation where I would have to sand down several side block I let this project languish.

Senet board side and the two ends. I ended up needing to cast more blocks to finish off the end pieces due to some misshapen blocks. I'm planning on making a box out of foamcore to hold the playing pieces. The left end piece has two indentations to pull to slide it out of the cavity.

The Ur side of the game box. I'm going  to fix the little chip in the middle with some green stuff after I get the rest of the piece finished.

I've painted the inside with black gesso and coated it with high gloss varnish so that the plaster doesn't rub off when the foamcore box gets pulled out.

Resolutions

This past new years, I resolved to complete some of the vast number of unfinished projects I've amassed. I've kept on track so far, but I restarted this blog in an effort to encourage myself to continue.

I gave myself two rules:
1) Finish two projects before starting a new one
2) Each month pick one project that I am exceptionally unmotivated to work on and finish it (no excuses).
